Search Tools for Medical Information

These sites are useful for finding MEDICAL information on the Web and/or the Internet, as opposed to search engines used for searching for ALL types of information.
Doctor's Guide to the Internet
This site lists medical resources on the Internet specifically for the physician. Information on conferences, new drugs, and new Web sites of interest are available, as well as a virtual medical bookstore.
Health On the Net Foundation
MedHunt, Health on the Net [HON]'s search engine, lists reviewed sites (when available). Topics may be searched by keyword.
Health A-to-Z
This search engine includes site reviews, an indication of the level of the site (professional- or consumer-oriented) and arrangement by broad categories.
Medical World Search
The site allows the user to search for a topic among "major medical websites," the National Library of Medicine's PubMed interface to MEDLINE, or commercial web search engines. A useful place to start a comprehensive search for medical information.
Achoo Healthcare Online
Simple keyword searching is available. Sites are not reviewed.
American Hospital Directory
Comparative statistics and information is available for most hospitals in the U.S. Hospitals can be searched by region or city. Information includes # of beds, contact information, services provided, etc.

Medline

Here are links to MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's index to medical literature. MEDLINE is available through most medical meta-sites, commercial vendors, and other venues. Although the database the same, the different modes of accessing MEDLINE may offer widely varying features and ease of use.
Internet Grateful Med
In addition to MEDLINE, HealthSTAR, PREMEDLINE, and AIDSLINE, this version of Internet Grateful Med (IGM) offers free access to several other NLM databases. Brief descriptions of available databases are available.
PubMed
The easy-to-use tool can be used to search MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE. More advanced features for experienced searchers are available.

Medical Meta-sites

These sites each offer several resources--Online CMEs, Reference sources, articles of current interest, etc.-- in a variety of disciplines and/or specialties.
Medical Matrix
Medical Matrix offers "ranked, peer-reviewed, annotated updated clinical medicine resources." Journals, textbooks, CME offerings, and other useful sites are indexed here.
Medscape
Pharmaceutical information, a career center, a bookstore and a CME locator are among the features of this site. Information organized by medical specialty is available.
Avicenna
Avicenna offers educational resources, information on professional organizations, resources for specific medical specialties, and a collection of links to online journals.
PhyNet Information Systems
PhyNet features a search tool for CME by date, location and topic; a catalog of medical supplies; lists of online resources compiled by medical specialty; and other useful resources.
HealthGate
Descriptions of "common and less common" diagnostic procedures, online consumer health magazines and a "wellness center" are free. Online CME and medical database access are among services available for a fee.
MedConnect
Medconnect offers a wide variety of resources, including free online CME resources, current news, and lists of online resources. Registration is required, but the site's services are free.
MedWeb: Biomedical Internet Resources
A searchable guide to medical resources arranged by category. This guide was created and is maintained by the Emory University Health Sciences Center Library.

Information Please: A one-stop fact-finder and resource for current news events.

PHYSICIAN LOCATORS

AMA Physician Select: American Medical Association's Web-based directory of physicians.

CMANET CADoctor Finder: The California Medical Association state medical association directory.

AAO Find an Ophthalmologis-USA: The American Academy of Ophthalmology Membership directory. Searching can be by country and city, by name, and by condition. The profile includes the physician's name, practice focus, certification and year, current professional activity, teaching position, hospital privileges, education and residency information and residency information and dates, and office locations and phone number(s).

USC CARE: USC Physician database can be searched by name or clinical office location. The physician's name is a hypertext link to a profile page that is creted on-the-fly.

MedSeek: MedSeek manages listings for over 280,000 physicians nationwide. The physician's name is a hypertext link to a basic listing with name, specialty, address and phone number, and e-mail address provided. The portfolio gives additional information about the scope of practice, specialty procedures, office information, physician's vitae, a scanned color photograph, and more. The basic listing is free, but enhancements are fee-based.
